Luxembourgish Language Resources

Introduction

I’ve recently started learning Luxembourgish and while there are a few good resources out there I wanted a very specific type of drill exercise. It’s similar to the idea that Duolingo uses, which is repetitive drills with matching words, but (in my opinion) it can be frustratingly slow because of all gamification, when I just want to drill certain focussed aspects. I have no problem with motivating myself and honestly the gamification side just slows me down.

Design Strategy

The strategy was to offer immediate feedback on whether an answer is right, and to cover the basics. Typically when learning a language (at least when I was a kid) you’d spend hours learning verb tables and conjugations. Fortunatley the language I’m trying learn (Luxembourgish) doesn’t have super-complicated verb conjugations (at least in the present tense). I wanted a way to write out all forms of a verb and have them checked (1st, 2nd, 3rd person, both singular and plural, as well as the infinitive). That worked well and means I can loop through the verbs that are available and double check, its even a stickler for accented characters (with a set available to copy and paste if you, like me, haven’t mastered how to get special characters on a standard keyboard yet).

Conclusions

I am pretty happy with how this has gone and will be making more tools moving forward. If anyone else finds them useful then please let me know on Mastodon.
